The Truth About GMO Corn in Under 3 Minutes

“I love judging food by its smell and feel and taste. The healthiest tomato isn’t always the perfect one that’s been covered in pesticides”

-Sheherazade Goldsmith

Corn casserole, corn on the cob, corn muffins, grilled corn…corn is everywhere we look and for the obvious reasons. It’s delicious! I don’t think there was a single person who could eat more corn than my brother and me, as kids. But even the most beautifully appealing objects can be dangerous or deadly and people weren’t as aware of GMOs or genetically modified organisms back then as they are now.

So what is it about GMOs?

“Currently, up to 92% of U.S. corn is genetically engineered (GE)”

This means, if you want organic corn, you will most likely have to find organic seeds and plant them yourself.

Here’s a short list of corn derivatives:

  • Starch
  • Sweeteners
  • Vanilla Extract (unless you buy organic)
  • Baking Powder
  • Caramel

So you can see that it’s not just physically eating the corn itself, but its also in so many ingredients we use every day!

“Nearly 90 percent of all the corn grown in the US becomes fuel for cars or feed for animals”

Even though we might not necessarily be eating the corn itself, we have to be careful when buying the meats we eat and the dairy we drink because all those GM or genetically modified grains and vegetables those animals are eating gets stored within their bodies. When we, in turn, eat them they are then inevitably stored within ours. See how many pesticides are stored within the average body here.

What exactly are GMOs doing to our bodies?

Since it would be unethical to test humans by feeding us nothing but GMO corn, here’s what it does to rats…

Are you worried yet?

To think that this could be what my family’s stomach and intestines look like makes me angry. Not at the corn, the animals we eat, or even the farmers who are spraying their crops with pesticides and using GM seeds. I’m angry because we as a society have let this happen. I’m guilty of buying some of these products just like everyone else so I guess I’m angry with my own choices as well!

These alterations to our food, our life source, have got to stop. When will it stop? If more and more customers go organic and stop paying into the garbage they know we are buying, they’ll have no option but to go organic themselves. After all, there’s no monetary value in a product we aren’t willing to ingest.

Have you gone to a corn-free lifestyle?
